Ear wax (cerumen) is your ear’s natural cleaning and protective barrier, trapping dust and moisturising skin of the canal. For some people it builds up due to narrow ear canals, hair, age-related changes, skin conditions, hearing aids or frequent earphone use. Cotton buds often push wax deeper, compacting it against the eardrum. When wax becomes impacted it can reduce hearing and cause discomfort. At EarClear – 4U we assess your ears and choose the safest way to remove it.

Microsuction uses a small medical suction device, guided by magnification and light, to gently lift wax from the ear canal without water. After a visual examination, your clinician carefully removes softened or impacted wax in a controlled, hygienic way. You may hear a soft whooshing or crackling sound as the wax is cleared. The method is precise, quick and tidy, making it suitable for most people, including those who have had problems with irrigation.

Ear wax removal at EarClear – 4U is performed by trained professionals using sterile, single-use tips and clinically approved techniques. Most people find microsuction comfortable; you might feel light pressure or a tickling sensation. If anything feels sensitive we pause and adjust. Temporary effects such as mild dizziness, cough reflex or slight tenderness can occur but usually settle quickly. Your clinician will discuss risks and benefits before treatment and only proceed if it’s safe for you.

Microsuction suits most adults, including hearing aid wearers, people with narrow canals or previous ear problems. It’s often preferred when irrigation is not advisable. We will not normally treat if you have severe pain, sudden hearing loss, active ear infection, recent ear surgery, or if you cannot comfortably keep still. Children may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis with a parent or carer present. Your appointment always begins with a thorough ear health assessment.

Unless we advise otherwise, using olive oil or sodium bicarbonate ear drops for 2–3 days before your visit can help soften wax and speed treatment. Tilt your head, place 2–3 drops once or twice daily, and avoid cotton buds. Do not use drops if you suspect a perforated eardrum, have ear pain or discharge, or have been told to avoid them. Most appointments take 20–30 minutes, including consultation, examination and treatment. If both ears are blocked we usually treat them in the same session. Very hard, impacted or longstanding wax may take a little longer, and occasionally a short follow‑up is helpful. Your clinician will explain what they see and how long it’s likely to take before starting, so you know exactly what to expect and can relax throughout.

Common signs include muffled or reduced hearing, a feeling of fullness or pressure, itching, discomfort, tinnitus (ringing), dizziness, or sounds seeming distant. You may notice water trapping after showering or swimming, whistling hearing aids, or a cough reflex when inserting earphones. Sudden pain, discharge, fever or rapid hearing loss are not typical of simple wax build‑up; seek medical advice promptly if you experience these symptoms.

Cotton buds push wax deeper and can scratch the ear canal or perforate the eardrum, so we strongly advise against using them. Ear candles are unsafe and ineffective; residue seen afterwards is not ear wax. Home suction or irrigation gadgets may also cause injury or infection. For safe, effective results choose professional care such as microsuction, where the ear is examined continuously and wax is removed under direct vision with sterile equipment.

At your appointment we examine your ears first. If we see signs of active infection (redness, swelling, discharge, significant pain) we may defer treatment and recommend GP care or prescribed drops. Because microsuction is a dry technique, it can often be performed safely when there is a historic perforation, but suitability is always assessed case by case. Never place drops in a perforated ear unless a clinician has advised you to do so.

Older children who can sit still and follow instructions may be suitable for microsuction; a parent or carer must attend. We do not usually treat very young children. For hearing aid users, regular checks help prevent feedback and keep aids working well. Remove hearing aids and moulds before your appointment and bring them with you. After treatment, let your ears settle for a few hours before wearing aids again to reduce irritation.
